Why Hypnobirth?

– because pregnancy is a long time to feel anxious and worried about giving birth, when you could be enjoying it using various easy to learn hypnobirthing techniques.

By joining an accredited hypnobirthing class, you and your birth partner(s) can change your fear about birth into excitement and actually enjoy the time leading up to meeting your precious little one.

What is a Hypnobirthing course?

A hypnobirthing course is much more than just “Hypnobirthing”, it’s a full antenatal course for you and your birth partner(s) that educates you on what is normal and natural in childbirth and teaches you both lots of practical ways to;

  • manage pregnancy
  • initiate labour naturally (rather than chemical inductions and unnecessary interventions)
  • manage early onset of labour
  • navigate active labour
  • assist rather than resist your perfectly designed birthing body
  • utilise the body’s own natural pain relieving endorphins (200 times the effect of Morphine!!)
  • learn birth positions to dramatically increase the outlet space for baby making birthing far easier and more comfortable
  • and much, much more

So you are about to have a baby? Huge congratulations!!

I remember calling the Doctor’s surgery to book my first midwife appointment. I was so excited, it was the first time I’d said it out loud to someone other than my partner “I’m pregnant”.

I’m not sure if I was expecting a confetti canon and party poppers, I knew it was natural and that I wasn’t the first to get pregnant, but this was a big deal for me. I was going to have a baby. A beautiful baby was actually growing inside me.

Despite being giddy with excitement, I was also a bit anxious about the birth. What would it be like? Is it as horrific as people make out? Would I manage? I started to search the internet for help and stumbled across HypnoBirthing®.

What is HypnoBirthing® and who is it for?

HypnoBirthing® is a tried and proven method that guides and prepares a woman in giving birth in a peaceful and extraordinarily beautiful manner.

It is a program that considers the psychological, as well as the physical, well-being of the mother, her birth partner, and the newborn, independent of context, whether that be in the quiet of a home, a hospital, or a birth centre.

But the part that really caught my attention…

HypnoBirthing® offered courses that could teach my partner and I what to expect based on fact, as well as visualisation, instant self relaxation, breathing and deepening techniques which were proven to work with my body and my baby to allow me to birth easily, safely and (the bit that was extremely high on my wish list) more comfortably!!

So I researched Hypnobirthing courses and discovered that…

HypnoBirthing® was originally created by a very well respected and highly qualified and experienced lady called Marie Mongan M.Ed., M.Hy based on the theories of two pioneers in natural childbirth, Dr. Jonathan Dye of Buffalo, New York and Grantly Dick-Read of the UK.

Marie holds several awards for distinguished service and achievement in the practice of hypnosis and is the 1995 recipient of the National Guild of Hypnotists President’s Award. In 2000 she was presented with the coveted NGH Charles Tebbetts Award for her contribution in “shedding the light” and advancing the awareness of hypnosis. In 2005 she became the first woman ever to receive the highest award given by the National Guild – the Rexford L. North Award.

Marie is the mother of four adult children, all born in the late ’50s and early ’60s. She experienced all four labours without labour medication, two of her births were entirely free of anaesthesia at a time when it was unheard of, and her husband was by her side in both the labour room and the “delivery” room.

Her book HypnoBirthing™–A Celebration Of Life, was written in 1989 and her latest book, HypnoBirthing™ – The Marie Mongan Method is still very much used today.

Marie believed that the mother’s body is perfectly designed to conceive, carry and birth a baby if the mother is allowed to birth calmly, peacefully and uninterrupted.

Childbirth does not need to be painful if the mother is properly prepared and fully relaxed. Pain is caused by constrictor hormones created by fear. Once the fear is eliminated and the mother is fully relaxed they are able to create endorphins, which are the naturally occurring, pain relieving, feel good hormones.

The body actually has natural pain relieving abilities, we just fight against them because we are so conditioned into thinking that childbirth should be painful, but it really doesn’t have to be!!

I can vouch for that myself!!

I’m not alone either, the Duchess of Cambridge also chose “HypnoBirthing International, The Mongan Method” for her births too!!

Following our Mongan Method HypnoBirthing® course, I went on to have two beautifully calm home births.

Our first daughter out of the pool, our second in the pool. Both times I felt empowered, confident and excited to meet our little girls. I had no fear, but was fully prepared for the births to take unexpected directions and for us to follow the guidance of the fabulous midwives. Whatever the circumstances, I felt fully prepared and armed with the knowledge that my body and my baby knew what to do.

Every mum should have the opportunity of a positive birthing experience and start for her baby. No mum should be robbed of the chance to enjoy her births because society conditions us to feel fear and anxiety.

It’s your body, your baby, your choice.

I would love to help you and your birth partner prepare for birth!
